An Assault on our Federal Systems: USAID was just the Beginning

The headlines describe events at a distance, but I witnessed the clinical and swift assault on USAID up close. And knew it was meant to hurt. As Russel Vought had planned, he put career civil servants “in trauma”.

It is a repulsive intent. Isolate us by removing our leadership, lock us out of our emails and USAID systems, ban communication with our fellow contractors (our coworkers) and recipients of our aid, and instill the fear of being fired for every misstep. Submission via fear and intimidation.

I have lived overseas for just over 30 years. I was a diplomat and have a combined public service of over 15 years. My family is full of people who gave significantly to public service, from judges to city officials to lawyers in federal agencies and members of the military who fought for our country.

But today, I feel like I have a target on my back. To have my government refer to me as a criminal or lazy, or to sit in wait until the next order comes and officially fires me, is a torture no person who spends 40 hours a week and more in the service of their country should face.

Our Secretary of State claims he wants to make the USA stronger, more secure and prosperous. Watching as an unelected billionaire dismantles one of the most effective tools to do this seems strangely out of synch with this effort.

We are talking about public servants. We didn’t begin working for the government to get rich but because we were committed to an ideal, namely making our country better.

The President’s billionaire buddies see government as a nuisance (regulations, taxes). They don’t often require its support. But those with a few dollars less in their pocket NEED the services of the U.S. government. And they need them to function daily and not be late or “paused” while the king decides if it is worthy of taxpayer funds. Funds to which we all contributed.

The current assault on our federal government agencies is moving like the L.A. wildfires. The DOGE Bros will soon be in a neighborhood near you. This may all have started at USAID, but it has now spread into agencies and offices that directly impact U.S. citizens at a local level (education, national parks, urban housing).

We cannot hesitate to act: contact congressional reps, remind your family and those in the USA to do the same; share information about resistance efforts here and in the USA to inspire others; correct mis- and disinformation and circulate accurate information to dispel the multitudes of lies the President is spewing regularly.

And most importantly create, sustain, and support community. Isolation leads to inaction. Democrats Abroad offers this community to fellow citizens living in South Africa, providing a gathering point for inspiration, information, and a means to act and resist this affront to our country’s democracy.

Let’s join together. Participate in the events DASA organizes, look at the Global DA website for other online events, and read all the information offered to help you understand the direct impact of what is happening in America for those living abroad. This awareness can help you focus your energy, focus your anger, and invigorate your individual agency

Remember: If we don’t act, they win.

It’s Millions of Small Acts That Will Save Democracy
A note from Susan M. Cashin, Chair of DASA’s Nominations and Election Committee

On February 19, 2025, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gave a rousing speech at a rally in New York City with Federal workers. One segment of her speech (min 10:09 to 11:00) encapsulated what we must do at this critical moment to defend our democracy from the forces that wish to destroy it.

“There is not one act that is going to save all of us – It is going to be the constant pressure and commitment to saving our democracy. They cannot withstand the constant, consistent pressure. They will crumble under it.

Every day, our job is to wake up and say, “What can I do today? There is no act too small that does not matter. Every single action matters.”

DASA and the work of its leadership team along with the growing membership is one of those acts that matter. This is not a time where we can sit on the fence and wait for the calvary to arrive. We voters ARE the calvary.

It is being active in supporting organizations such as Democrats Abroad where we can be effective and help to turn the tide. Please join us in this growing movement to defend and preserve democracy. Below you’ll find info on upcoming events and calls to action; voting information for WI and FL in particular; DASA Exco Elections; and our upcoming AGM with Special Guests Martha McDevitt-Pugh, the International Chair of Democrats Abroad, and Rebecca Lammers from the Taxation Task Force, providing important updates for Americans living overseas.

Together millions of small individual acts can save our democracy. Begin here by participating in and supporting the work of DASA!

VOTING CONTINUES IN 2025!
EVERY OFFICE ACROSS THE STATES IS CRITICAL

Why should you request a ballot (submit an FPCA) using Vote From Abroad in 2025?

There are important elections in Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin already on the calendar. More may be scheduled!

  • It ensures that your voter registration remains current.
  • It ensures protections under federal law (UOCAVA) for your vote.
  • It requires your Local Election Official to send you ballots for all elections you are eligible to vote in during the calendar year.
  • There’s no such thing as an “off year”. Special elections can – and do – pop up unexpectedly. Be ready.

There are elections on 1 April in WI and FL.
Please go to www.votefromabroad.org today to be prepared!

FLORIDA VOTERS in Districts 1 and 6: Your SPECIAL ELECTION is on April 1st!

URGENT ACTION - CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TODAY TO
VOTE NO ON THE SAVE ACT!

Our ability to vote from abroad is on the line! A disenfranchisement bill threatens access to voter registration and could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters abroad. The misnamed "Safeguard American Voter Eligibility" (SAVE) Act (No. HR.22/S.128) is coming up for a floor vote in the House soon. If passed, it would require voters to register and vote in person with a passport or birth certificate that exactly matches their name, eliminating the option of online registration.

For military and civilians abroad, rural voters, seniors, college students, people who have changed their names and don’t possess a passport, this bill would leave them unable to register to vote, as many don't have the required documentation or are unable to appear in person to register.

While the bill will undermine every American's ability to vote, there is NO PROVISION that will SAFEGUARD the right to vote of American voters overseas, the military and their families.

What can you do to SAVE your right to vote?
- Call or write to your representatives in Congress.
- Share testimonial videos, let your Congressmembers know how this bill will affect you.
- Spread the word!
Don't be disenfranchised!

Women's History Month 2025 - Our Rights Are Under Attack

Excerpts from a letter from Ann Hess, Chair: Democrats Abroad Global Women's Caucus

We are in a moment of crisis. More than ever, the rights of ordinary people – the rights of women, LGBTQ+ people, people of color, and those in marginalized communities — are under direct assault by a radicalized Republican agenda that is destroying our country.

March 8 is International Women’s Day, a day that is celebrated internationally with marches and events. The month of March is Women’s History Month. This is our moment to take action—a global moment for resistance. This is our time to march, post, organize, and demand justice.

The Trump administration and its enablers are working to erase women’s history, silence our voices, and strip us of our rights. Project 2025 is the blueprint for this extremist takeover which is in fact happening now:

  • Threatening reproductive rights and attacks on our bodily autonomy and freedom
  • Eliminating Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives
  • Denying the rights and existence of LGBTQ+ individuals and stalling the ERA
  • Stalking immigrants and deporting them without due process
  • Attacking democracy itself with the SAVE Act and other voter suppression legislation

This is not just a rollback, but a coordinated effort to destroy decades of hard-fought progress.

Take Action Saturday, March 8, 2025

The Democrats Abroad Global Women’s Caucus and the Resistance Advocacy Program invite you to take part in a Day of Action Around the World on Saturday, March 8, 2025. (See event info below in DASA Newsletter)

  • Sign up for Take Action alerts with Democrats Abroad
  • Prepare to take and post PHOTOS and SHORT VIDEOS to social media, and to use our hashtags. Get five friends to do the same.

💥 This is not a drill. Women's rights, LGBTQ+ protections, democracy itself, and fundamental freedoms are on the line. We only win by fighting back—loudly, relentlessly, and together.

Are you in? Let’s do this!

In resistance, Ann Hesse
Chair, Democrats Abroad Global Women’s Caucus

Let's come together as US Citizens, in SA and across the continent, for a panel discussion on How the USAID Shutdown is Affecting Our Community and What We Can Do.

Many of our members in SA are affected and certainly our wider community is reeling from the actions of the current US govt. We'll share updates on what’s happening, how the impact is being felt and what we can do in response. Please join this important discussion.
